The pre-roll blunt has been misnamed, misunderstood, and mis-shelved since the licensed market opened. Time to fix that. Pre-roll blunt is not the same as a pre-roll joint. This is a common misconception that needs to be addressed before we dive in. The wrap is different; the burn is different, and the session it produces is different. Understanding what a true pre-roll blunt is is where this guide starts.
A pre-roll blunt is cannabis flower, usually a gram and freshly ground, rolled in a hemp wrap, finished with a glass tip, and pre-packed by a Class 1 Cultivator or Class 2 Manufacturer.
While the practice of rolling cannabis in a leaf originated in the Caribbean, the name “blunt” actually came from the Phillies Blunt brand of cigars. Today, in licensed cannabis markets, Hemp wraps have largely replaced tobacco leaf wraps. (NOTE: Dispensaries are explicitly prohibited from selling tobacco products under NJAC 17:30-14.10, which effectively rules out tobacco leaf wraps.)

Hemp wraps are the default blunt wrap in the licensed NJ market. They are made from industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa with less than 0.3% THC). The entire plant is ground into coarse powder, mixed with water and binding agents, then pressed into sheets and dried. This is distinct from hemp rolling papers, which use only hemp fiber.
Hemp wraps burn more slowly and evenly than rolling paper. There’s also a distinct, earthy, botanical flavor that complements the cannabis.
Infused pre-rolls (including both joints and blunts) are the fastest-growing and now top-selling segment within the pre-roll category. The ground flower undergoes an infusion method: external or internal.
Flavored blunts can mean two different things: either the wrap has added flavor, or the filter tip is infused with terpenes to release flavor. Natural terpene flavoring uses isolated compounds from cannabis or other botanical sources, such as limonene from citrus, myrcene from mango, and linalool from lavender.
Infused pre-roll blunts require a Class 2 Manufacturer’s license and are classified as cannabis-infused products. Flavored blunt pre-rolls follow the same requirements as those with added flavoring compounds.
The four strains we chose are from Full Tilt Labs, a family-owned cultivator based in New Jersey that grows in living soil with organic inputs. That’s what they put in a blunt: each one 1 gram, organic hemp wrap, reusable glass tip. What makes these four blunts worth knowing is their genetics and terpene composition.
Sun-ripened peach, vibrant trichomes, dialed into the present
Sativa • 1g • THCA 27.81% • TAC 30.37% • Lineage: Peach Rings × Orange Vanilla Milano
Peach Milano channels the taste of sun-ripened peaches with a subtle layer of earthy spice underneath. Its vibrant, fluffy buds are dusted with a sprawling coat of trichomes. The flower mirrors its flavor before you even light it. The cross delivers a clean mood-filling head high followed by a gentle body ease that keeps things calm without slowing you down.
Features
Best for: Morning to midday: creative work, time outdoors, or any session where you want to stay upbeat and present.
Landrace character, classic sativa effect, grown when it would have been easier not to
Sativa • 1g • Lineage: Chemdawg D × Colombian Gold
Colombian Gold flowers in 10 to 12 weeks, yields moderately, and caps around 20 percent THC. Most cultivators stopped growing it for exactly those reasons. Full Tilt saw that as a reason to put it in a blunt. The result is a bright, uplifting aroma combining fresh citrus and sweet earthiness, with shimmering buds that reflect its rich terpene profile and energetic character.
Features
Best for: Daytime use and social settings, and anyone curious what landrace sativa genetics feel like before decades of crossbreeding for maximum THC changed what most cannabis is.
Features
Best for: End-of-day decompression. Experienced consumers. Hell-Z is not a strain for doing things. It is a strain after being done with them.
Ripe blueberries, cherry tart finish, reported for calm without sedation
Balanced Hybrid • 1g • THC ~28% • Lineage: Blueberry RangRang × Cherry RangRang
Blueberry Cherry expertly blends the classic profiles of ripe blueberries and sweet cherries. Its aroma and buds deliver a refreshing, mouthwatering experience enriched by a subtle earthiness that grounds the sweetness. Blueberry Cherry is a balanced hybrid built from two distinct fruit-forward lineages: Blueberry RangRang and Cherry RangRang. The blueberry side brings the deep berry base; the cherry cross adds the tart brightness and dense bud structure.
Features
Best for: Late afternoon to early evening. Unwinding without committing to a full night in, for those seeking both mental clarity and calm.
| Strain | Flavor Profile | Wrap | Best For |

Consumers prefer the convenience of smoking without setup hassles, and pre-rolls eliminate nearly every step between purchase and consumption. No grinder, no rolling papers, no rolling skills, no tray. Automated pre-rolls are also consistent in fill weight, making dosing more predictable from session to session. The 5-pack and 10-pack formats further extend that convenience. As a result, pre-rolls now account for over 14 percent of cannabis sales in established legal markets, steadily rising since 2020.
Glass tip
The borosilicate glass used in most commercial tips is specifically chosen for its thermal properties. It’s a poor conductor of heat. As smoke travels through the glass tip, the glass absorbs heat from the smoke, lowering its temperature before it reaches the mouth.
Hemp wrap burn rate, combustion, & terpene expression
Hemp wraps burn slower and more consistently than rolling paper. It’s thick enough to create more combustion surface area and therefore extends the session time. The practical result: a 1g hemp wrap blunt burns approximately 15–20 minutes at a steady pace, depending on how someone draws. Overall, this is significantly longer than a 1g joint.
Organic hemp wraps, without additives or bleaching agents, produce a cleaner combustion profile than conventional commercial rolling papers or tobacco leaves. And because hemp wraps are flavor-neutral and do not contain competing aromatic compounds, they do not mask the flower’s terpene profile the way traditional blunt wraps do.
Whole flower vs. shake or trim? This is the key factor that’s considered in the pre-roll market. You may choose among three inputs:
Full Tilt Labs specifies on their own product page: “premium cannabis flower.”
Curing also matters as much. It allows residual moisture to redistribute evenly throughout the flower. This means that when a pre-roll is properly cured, greater amounts of terpenes and cannabinoids are preserved (compared to improper curing).
Ideal moisture content for pre-roll production: approximately 10–12%. Too dry, and the flower crumbles during grinding. Too moist, and it packs unevenly. Some manufacturers go above and beyond, even measuring particle size to ensure moisture content.
Where does hemp wrap come from? They aren’t rolled from scratch. The hemp wrap is a pre-formed component with glass tips already attached. Some order the pre-formed tubes and then fill them with their material, in-house.
Grinding
Mass-market pre-rolls are often “stuffed” with overly dry, finely ground material (i.e., weed dust), which produces a harsh, fast burn and restricted draw. Premium producers use a coarser grind that preserves more of the flower’s structure and produces a slower, more even burn.
Filling the tube
This is done by hand at a small-batch scale or with cone-filling machines at larger operations. Packing density is the critical variable at this state, so if done by hand, it must be measured very accurately and done in a climate-controlled environment.
Sealing the blunt
Hemp wrap blunts require moisture to seal. The process: Apply light moisture to the sealing edge. Roll it firmly across a flat surface. Then, they toast it lightly with a lighter to tighten the hemp fibers and secure the roll.
Wrap type. It determines burn rate, combustion, and flavor interaction. Unflavored organic hemp is flavor-neutral, letting the strain’s terpene profile come through unobstructed. Flavored hemp wraps add a layer.
Size and weight. Standard pre-roll blunt: 1g. (Go for pre-roll joints instead, if you want to go lower, in the 0.5 to 1g range.)
Strength and potency. Terpene profile, flower quality, and inhalation behavior all affect the delivered experience. NJ licensed dispensary flower-only blunts currently run approximately 20–31% THC, depending on strain and batch. Infused blunts exceed this substantially.
Flavor preference. Consumers who prioritize flavor should look at the terpene panel, not just the THC number.
For consumers new to cannabis who want to try a blunt specifically, a standard 1g hemp wrap blunt with a moderate-THC potency may be perfect. In addition, the glass tip naturally creates short pauses between pulls, unlike with paper tips. Note: 1g may be more than enough for one session.
For seasoned cannabis users, pre-roll blunts are the best when looking for a terpene-forward, full-session experience. There are also infused blunts if you want to increase potency.
The genetics, the curing, the terpene panel, and the production quality matter. All of those shape what ends up in a blunt. A pre-roll blunt requires standardized, expert preparation for the active compounds (e.g., terpenes, THC, & other minor cannabinoids) to meaningfully influence your smoking experience. The licensed market, with mandatory batch testing and regulatory recall mechanisms, provides consumer protections that the unregulated market does not. At Elevated Herb, every pre-roll blunt on our shelves has reached that standard, and beyond. Let our staff walk you through which pre-roll blunts are worth exploring based on your preferences.
Not necessarily. Strength depends on the flower and strain, not the wrap. Blunts burn slower and longer, which changes the pacing of a session, not the potency of what’s inside.
A 1-gram hemp wrap blunt typically burns 15 to 20 minutes. Burn time depends on packing density, wrap thickness, and how the blunt is smoked, solo or shared.
No. NJ-CRC regulations prohibit the sale of tobacco products at licensed cannabis retailers. Every pre-roll blunt sold at a licensed dispensary uses a hemp wrap.
Yes, with pacing. A 1-gram blunt is designed for sharing or extended sessions. Beginners should take a few draws, wait, and assess before continuing. Starting with a low THC blunt helps.
Keep them in the original sealed tube, in a cool, dark place between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. For multi-packs, store in a proper container once opened to prevent the hemp wrap from drying out.
For experienced consumers, yes. Infused blunts combine flower with concentrates like kief or live resin, increasing both potency and terpene complexity. They also carry a higher price point, so they might not be a budget-friendly option.
The hemp wrap should feel soft and workable, not brittle. The flower inside should have a distinct strain aroma when the tube is opened. A stale blunt burns harshly, loses flavor early, and has little to no aroma.
It depends on where the flavor sits. A flavored hemp wrap adds taste to the session without touching the flower. If terpenes or flavoring are added to the cannabis itself, they interact directly with the strain’s existing aromatic profile.
